Having the same issue here. I ve tried all of the steps recommended by the support team except full computer wipe with no avail. Playing games and surfing the web is near impossible with the constant WMP pop-up, as is typing.

I am running Windows 7 new custom install; was running XP. I have moved wmpnwksvc to manual, but if anything needs it, it still takes 50 of cpu cycles and 2.1GB of memory out of a 4 GB system. Completely unacceptable engineering, Redmond. Spent 2 fruitless

hours chatting with tech support and thier only idea was turning it off disabling upon start up. Not much of an answer at all.

this is exactly my problem - windows media player keeps randomly opening and even if you close/end process, just keep opening and forces itself into front view, minimizing everything and completely rendering the pc useless. Doesn t matter if you try to

minimize it, keeps forcing everything to minimize. this goes on for about 5-10 mins, and then for some reason it just simply stops and closes for good. if i try and play music ie play a playlist while it has one of these spasms it just keep skipping

through each song playing it for 1 second then selecting the next i have also disabled the WMP services mentioned before.

OK, happy to report that after a month, this problem has not returned. If you have the same problem, do as I did - get rid of WMP and replace it with a 3rd party alternative.

I think this might be a keyboard problem as someone suggested upthread. I m troubleshooting a friend s computer that has this problem and it s exactly as everyone has described above: WMP keeps jumping up as the active program and prevents you from typing.

I noticed that if I only used the mouse that the problem didn t happen. I wiggled the keyboard cable once and WMP jumped into the foreground. I wonder if you guys might try a different keyboard and see what happens. Good luck

I too think it s a keyboard problem. Up until a week ago, I never had this problem. I was using a Logitech G15 keyboard. I decided to purchase a Razer Lycosa and it started happening almost immediately after I installed the new keyboard. It s exactly like

I had this problem and it wasn t my keyboard; it was actually my Logitech G35 headset. Turns out that one of the buttons was programmed to start Windows Media Player and sometimes that button was getting accidentally pressed, or if the headset was on my

desk it was sometimes permanently pushing the button.

I used SysInternals Process Explorer procexp to look at the running wmplayer.exe process, which told me that it had a parent process called g35.exe, and that was then a giveaway as to the cause of the problem. This might be a useful trick to help you find

The underlying issue is that the three G35 buttons have to be assigned to something and because I didn t want to use that button, I assigned it to Media Player.

I had the same problem. It seemed to be very random. What I noticed was that my bluetooth mouse would stop working at the same time.

I checked the settings in WMP and under plugins there was a plugin for Bluetooth Headset that was enabled. I never enabled that and am not sure why it was there unless it came from an update. Regardless I disabled that plugin and it stopped happening.

It appears the OS though my mouse or my Cell Phone possibly was a bluetooth headset and would launch WMP when ever it saw it. I d close WMP and it d launch a few seconds later.

Disabled the plugin and the problem is gone. Hope this helps someone.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D.

Furthermore the trojan was named Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.

I do agree that it may very well be something partially to do with Razer, as I do have a Razer Lycosa keyboard and Razer Deathadder Mouse, however I bought the keyboard after the mouse so I would agree it s the keyboard. I usually just minimize it to the

taskbar, in the little window form. If you right click on the taskbar, and highlight over toolbars, and check the windows media player one, it will minimize it to it s own personal window down in the toolbar, and will stop fighting the pc dominance, then just

give it like 15 minutes, and once you have minimized for a while, you can maximize it, close it, and it should be gone until next time. It s an easy temporary fix.

Then I went into the Options menu under Tools If you dont know much about computers, you can right click the bar at the top of your screen and select Show menu bar if you cant see the Tools menu I turned off a few default options:

-Add remote media files to library when played - Under Player

-Display media information from internet - Under Privacy

-Update music files by retrieving information from the internet - Under Privacy

-Download usage rights when I play or sync a file - Under Privacy

-Automatically check if protected files need to be refreshed - Under Privacy

-Retrieve additional information from the internet - Under Library

Mostly because I don t like my applications sending/receiving information without my approval ANYWAY.

As soon as I clicked apply and closed the window no more popping up.

I m not positive all of these options need to be changed to stop this from occurring but this worked for me and I didn t feel like trying them all 1 at a time to find the magic combination.

This was always happening when I finished playing a certain game, I checked the properties and low and behold this is what I found -mce after my game exe. Have no idea how it got there, but problem solved. Hope that helps

I have had a Logitech G15 keyboard for a while now and have never had this problem until recently. But recently is also when I re-installed all of the software for the keyboard software other than the drivers.

This wmplayer issue where it was always doing IO and chewing up an whole engine was driving me crazy. After reading this, I decided to try shutting down the Logitech keyboard software and voila, wmplayer went idle.

Obviously in my case, a piece of 3rd party software was driving wmplayer to go nuts. For those that don t have special keyboards, you might still try looking for a program that might be driving wmplayer in a similar fashion.

Well you can add me to the list of wireless keyboards. I have a logitec y-RJ20. I switched it out with the wired one that came with the computer and BAM problem resolved. Thanks to Microsoft and the ones that posted here with the same keyboard problem.

I never would have guessed that this was the problem. I should have known though as I used to work in a GM dealership and similar EMI problems with cars. BTW the batteries were low 2.5 verses 3 volts so that may have been the problem.

Try to delete or uninstall Razer s software. There is a bug in the Razer s software that causes WMP any other music players automatically open by itself. This will help.

Mine is due to the Lycosa keyboard.

If I try to use the WMPlayer it opens it behaves like having a stuck button advancing through the songs.

Set the razer software default media player to one I don t have and it goes away for me. Turn it back and it immediately recurs.

Mine is an intermittent fault so a few reboots later it goes away for a few months so I can set it back to WMPlayer.

Tomshardware suggests it is dodgy razer harware rather than software but I am too lazy to pull it apart.

It is infrequent enough that I forget what causes it by the next time it occurs and I end up here.

I had a similar problem with the latest version of iTunes which was driving me nuts. iTunes was starting up randomly and even would play a song. Like it had a mind of its own.

However I was given the Piriform register cleaner found at

www.CCleaner.com . I cleaned the regestry and deleted everything on my browser list. I have not had a problem since. Oh I should mention that once you have used the cleaner you should also defrag you computer.

I m having the same problem. I downloaded something and it had me select media center as its file place to open at. sorry i dont speak well when it comes to tech I tried going to settings and everything but that didn t work. I have a feeling I have a

virus, but my AVG got deleted a while back by someone who borrowed my computer without me knowing So when I went to download AVG again, I clicked save when the download popped up and it opened in windows media center. So I can t download anything, WMC keeps

Let me try to articulate what so many have already described, accurately and precisely, in the vain hope that 75th time s the charm if the people who had this question count at the top of this thread is to be believed :

For some inexplicable reason, something utterly unprecedented outside the realm of malicious viruses and malware is clearly endemic to Microsoft s media player s interaction with wait for it Microsoft s operating system. While I m sure this situation

is restricted to certain computer configurations or there d be more than 75 people registering to complain, it is no less inexcusable given the sheer inanity of the issue:

No program should be capable of hijacking its own operating system by forcing repeated, untriggered activations, at random times, incessantly interrupting computer use for apparently

random durations, for over two years, without anyone bothering to figure out what s wrong.

For heaven s sake, there are enough people having this problem to warrant introducing an option to throttle repeated WMP activations in a patch, don t you think. Googling windows media player keeps popping up --- as a quoted phrase, no less, thus excluding

any other variation of phrasing this issue --- turns up

12 pages of going no-where. Here is my 2 cents of maybe help.

If you have one and only one media player on your pc that searches the web for anything,

Turn its web search setting to off,

Go to autoplay and set it to ask me each time,

Go to computer services and see if it is listed there, if it is set it to manual.,

Go back and see if the settings are still the way you set them,

If any one of your settings are not set that way,

Go to controle panel and set it to the default player if the custom setting was / is used setting it to default may not stay that way usually becouse another player is set as the default elsware .

Go to the one media players websight and update it..Do not let the update set itself as the default player. make sure its web search is off

If you have other media players on your pc do the same steps for each player, one player at a time. But do not set any of them as a default player.

Now put a music cd in a drive. A pop up should ask you what to do, that pop up should show the first player it was set as the default prevously as the default, and list any other players. Play the default player, ifit plays properly web

search is off , Turn the player off and eject the cd.

Put the same cd back in the drive.When the pop up pops up, choose one of the other players if you have them. dose it play properly. If it does, do thesame for the other players.

Now you should have one or more media players with there web searching set to off. and one is set as the default player.,and they, one and all play properly.

If the default media player will play video disks play one whith the web search still set to off. Does it play video properly.

If so, do the same with any other media players. with web searching off.

Now, you should have one or more, media players, that play music and video properly. And becouse they are all set to

MANUALLY start, in every setting in the computer and all of there web searching features are OFF.

THEY CAN not start up in any way by there self.

HOWEVER, there are more steps to do if the above, did not solve the problem.

I ve been having the exact same problem for a few days, with WMP behaving worst today. Like FabianAndersson, I use a Razer Lycosa keyboard. I just uninstalled the driver and now no more WMP pop ups. Razer seems to have told Tom s Hardware that the issue

In my case the problem started when I installed the Amazon mp3 downloader, and it went away when I uninstalled it a couple of hours later after downloading an album. I thought at first it was popping up the player after each track downloaded, but I realised

Nope. you are wrong. I does not work with turn windows on /off, nor with services.exe disable as media center/player already disabled - So therefore, I really do not understand what patience Microsoft expect from me as a customer. The easiest step will

I had the same problem, it was hardware. I think it was the keyboard with a sticky media button or it could have been the media headphones, I can t remember. Anyway I suggest that you unplug all media related hardware and replace the keyboard and see if

you still get the problem. If you don t then start adding the media related hardware one by one until the problem reoccurs and then you have found the offender.
